Hello everyone,Before we start yes i have a manual.I am getting no spark on both coils "1988 johnson 25 hp"I checked the ohms on coils and it was within the 250-300 per manual.i have continuity on both spark plug wires
and i have continuity on my stop switch"i pushed it in and my light came on so i am thinking powerpack. But the manual is a little confusing on the way to test powerpack"it says i need some stevens cd-77 voltmeter" i have a multimeter just hope someone can help me through this thanks
p.s. which is the primary and secondary side of the coil

From what I have learned on this site...a Fluke meter will not do the job unless you have a DVA adapter. You can search for old post and find a source of supply. When I was looking I think they were around $100. You need a peak reading meter, where a Fluke reads average voltage.

hello
8up is about right.
anyway you can test the stator resistance with a VOM. if it tests good then test the trigger coil resistance. the stop switch on that engine works by grounding the pack when pushed. if it shows any resistance at all it may be enough to trigger the pack kill circuits. best way to test is to remove the black/yellow wire from the pack circuit by removing the pin from the connector on some models or simply dissconecting the amphenol connector that has a single blk/yellow wire.
good luck and keep posting]

ok Guys just went and checked the manaul as far as the stator and trigger coil checks it does not show it,i have the
ignition coil
stop button
sensor
powerpack
and charge coil test
i looked at my powerpack the black/yellow wire goes to the top of the stop button and from the bottom of the stop button to ground underneath one of my ignition coil bolts if i isolated both wires will taht eliminate my stop switch as my problem"instead of trying to isolated at the connector "thanks i will wait for your reply

hello
if all you have is a stop button with no other controls make sure the wire is not pinced to ground anywhere. you may be able to just remove the ground wire from the stop circuit. unlees its a pinced wire some place. if its just a bad switch removing the ground will find it. better to just run trhe proper tests.
good luck and keep posting

Caldog.... The usual problem is a failed powerpack, and it's a good idea to have a spare powerpack on hand (and the tools to change it) for emergencies.

Unless you intend to be working on various engines, it's more logical to purchase a powerpack to try (or keep for a spare) than to spend a hundred dollars or so for a piece of test equipment for a one time useage.

Set your meter on the AC scale and X results by 1.414, should be close to tell if you need a pack. Ckeck the pack output to coil, then stator output to pack. Like Joe said probley bad pack.

Re: powerpack??? 1988 25 johnson

before you go out and spend some money for equipment to test the power-pack try this

1)hook up a timming light to the wires coming into the power-pack ( one at a time)

2) have the iginition coil wire hooked up to a spark tester and spin motor over with starter
timing light should pick-up electrical pulse from trigger coil
do not remember color of wires for trigger coil
but with manual you will be able to tell

3) if NO pulse from timming light you will have problem under the flywheel (stater ring)

this has helped me out quite a few times

just because it's a Boat doesn't mean it will float

Re: powerpack??? 1988 25 johnson

THANKS NDSSS
when you say check each wire with a timing light for a pusle at the ignition coil ,i would have to have everything hooked up as normal ,and if so then all the wires are insulated and i would have to skin them "i don't think that would a good idea" or are you saying i should leave the connector "boot" from the flywheel to powerpack off and check there "but then i would get no pulse at the coils
I have a used powerpack from my 1991 90 hp johnson that is good "only it's a 4 cylinder"would it be a good idea to try it out on the 1988 25 hp just to eliminated if anything is bad under flywheel in other words if i get some type of spark then i can safely say it's my powerpack thanks

Re: powerpack??? 1988 25 johnson

please email me at bed245@yahoo.com
My timing light is a clamp on type( self contained) and I do not have to strip any wires.
You need to have everything connected just like you are checking for spark but you are checking for the pluse going to the coil instead and from
there you check to see if you have a pluse going into the powerpack.
