Powerpak and Stator Questions

Hey all,
Replaced the coils in my 73 65HP Johnson. I have a couple of questions surrounding the Powerpak. What role does it play in ignition besides sending 12 volts to the coil at the right time? What are signs of a powerpak failing? Will the motor run crappy or does a bad pak usually result in simply no spark?

The stator charges the battery correct? What role does it play in ignition?

the factory service manual is actually a very enjoyable read and explains all the systems, mine is an optical ignition so its different from yours.
The manual gives all the proceedures for testing each component.

I have a '72 Evinrude 65HP. I had a powerpack fail on me on the water last summer. I had run the boat at WOT for a good amount of time that day and it performed fine. Then, idling through a no-wake zone, the motor just cut off like I had turned the key. They may fail gradually in other circumstances, but that was my experience.

Thanks guys.

My service manual should be arriving today via UPS. I plan on doing some reading tonight.

I had mine go bad on my 40HP last year. It would run, run ,run, pop, run run, pop run , run, run. What it was doing is randumly firing one of the cyclinders 180 deg out of phase.
