Ok, I confess, I am eat up with the DA.

So I posted this morning about the prop results yesterday and this clanging problem I had.

Well it wasn't a week ago and this guy was having a clunking problem (on this forum) when shifting gears and I said make sure your prop nut is tight....DAAAAAAAAA!

So I go out to the shop this AM (after talking to you guys and gals) and start thru the process as to why this new one is clanging and the other one wasn't.

Lo and behold, the first thing I touch (er ah second, first was pulling the locking tabs up) is the nut AND IT'S LOOSE!

Now do you suppose for one minute that if the prop nut is loose when you are shifting back and forth in the low thrust range that you will hear noises.......

Yea verily, I'm here to tell you.

Took the prop off and went thru it and the 2 others (had my dial caliper and machinist rules out comparing the differences between the 3 props). Well, everything looked good and no need to worry.

Got the manual out and went over the lower unit things 3 or 4 times to make sure that every thing was up to snuff.....everything I could check without disassembling it. I had just done a fluid change a month ago and fluid was good so I doubted that I had internal problems. Besides when you run 52 mph and everything is a singing, can't be much wrong, right?

So this time I got my torque wrench out....you know the thing with numbers on it....Grin

Well after torqueing it, it was obvious that my first guess (when I installed it initially without the torque babe) was a stupid guess as it was on at less than 25 ft# best I can second guess what I did.

So I'm eating crow.................but I am tickled as the problem was cheap to fix.

HTH someone out there with similar problems.

Mark.

But you don't want to hear the rest of the story.....that trip yesterday cost me a set of tires (live on a rock road and they graded the road and I know when it happened) on my truck and a trip tomorrow to an orthopedic surgeon to remove some fluid on my knee.

I knew the tire was going down (when I was launching being I have to climb inside the bed of the truck to get the boat off), but I wanted to run the new prop and I said that I'd worry about the tire when I got thru playing. So the truck is sitting at the launching ramp with the tire going flat...while I'm playing........was I worried? Look I had more important things to be doing. The tire could wait.

On the knee I helped a neighbor work some cows about 3 days ago and overexerted myself. You know, at 65 things don't work quite as well as they did when you were the invincible 20!!!! Will know tomorrow how much damage I did when I go to the ortho sr. surgeon type doc. (Yuck) But I gotta get going as hayin season starts in a couple of weeks and I need the left leg to work the clutches on my tractors....oh well.

See you folks get all this (baloney) and it's free. You don't have to go to a bookstore and buy a fiction novel for some real reading excitement. LMAO.

Oh well.

Buttttttttttttttt the important thing (all the rest of this is trivia...really) I had fun getting over 50 mph on my little piece of crap tin can bass boat with my puky little 90 Merc. But boy is that prop pretty.....and that Black Lacquer on that Merc is just a shinin.....but the boat still looks like a piece of crap. Good! Now I can fish with it and not worry about scratching it. Grin

Nuf Said

Have fun. Life is short.

Mark
