Re: Prayers requested

Best hopes and wishes from here. Real tough thing to go through. My grandma had to go through that last year and hers was not near as tough as your FIL. Good luck.

Re: Prayers requested

Well, he came through the surgery okay. They are keeping him sedated overnight and on a repirator. Tomorrow they will wake him and remove it. They feel they got all the cancer, but will not know for about a week. Took a 1/3 of his stomach and 2/3's of his esophagus. Liquid diet for a month with a feeding tube, but before he went under said he was looking forward to a steak!

They know there was cancer in one of the 30 lymph nodes they removed. Will test them and see. If it is in less then 5, they feel comfident that all the cancer is gone.

Anyway, thanks for your prayers - we felt God's strength through out the long, grueling day. We are exhausted and ready for bed now, and Pap still needs prayers. Thanks again - it is great to belong to the "iboats family."

Re: Prayers requested

Good news - thanks for the prayers! He was moved to a semi-private room today. Resperatory Therapist was amazed at the results of some tests, and nurse that moved Pap couldn't believe he got out of the wheelchair himself and into his bed! He kicked us out of his new room so he could sleep and we are home now.

Thanks again for the prayers - UPMC, the staff and doctors, are all wonderful, and God was everpresent! We should get the patholegy tests back the end of this week to tell us how many lymph nodes had cancer in them. We are praying for a low number, but whatever the results, we are still rejoicing that God is in control!

Re: Prayers requested (UPDATED)

I had to get online from Amsterdam to let you know I just heard from my wife - after I left yesterday my FIL had his follow-up doctors appointment. The drains were removed, the feeding tube was removed, and the Doctor feels very strongly that they got ALL of the cancer! Pap is gaining strength and up to eating 3 oz of soft food (cream of wheat, cream of potato soup, etc. ) per hour, and is also drinking his ensure and water at the rate of 6 oz per hour. The Doc is pleased, and we are rejoicing. God, through the help of medical science, answered our prayers!

Thank-you all for your well wishes and prayers. Our Relay for Life team will have new meaning this year!
