The boat is a 1988 with a 1988, 88hp Johnson. I just had to go faster so I replaced the original with a 1976 200hp Evinrude. Unbeknowst to me at the time, I connected the original control cables that seemed to fit but the controls just did not operate as I thought they should. Now I fine out that I should have replaced the cables with pre 1979 cables. So I ordered a pair(400) along with the connector kit for the engine end. However, the control end won't fit the control box as the cable end is bare. Is there a connector kit for the control box end? Or, do I need a pre '79 control box also. The present control box is a single lever. Also, what is a bit confusing is that with the connector kit attached to the cable at the engine, it appears to be the same length as the post '79 when seated properly and connected to the linkage. The post '79 cable was adjusted as far as it could go, but wouldn't allow the carbs to open all the way. I couldn't get above 4600 rpms. Shouldn't the pre '79 cables be maybe 1-2 inches longer to seat properly and allow for a wider range for adjustments? Thanks

Not much help here, but I would try to stay with the later model control, and cables.

As you found out, the early/late cables are not swappable in the control. I don't understand why they didn't work at the motor end though.

Go to:
shop.evinrude.com
Evinrude

55Hp
Remote control
There you will find the end pieces and hardware you need.
