Pre-Alpha Cooling System Failure

Hello again folks....

I was out earlier tonight for a tour and for some reason the water pump just quit completely. I have a faulty temp gauge, and monitor the the cooling by touching the metal coupler at the thermostat housing where the cooling hose attaches, it's tedious as I am a bit paranoid and tend to check it constantly. Until tonight, it usually remains the same temp as the outside water as this is the first stop in the cooling system since the impeller. When I noticed that things were getting too hot, I shut the engine down, pulled the cooling hose, and started the engine again to see if water was at least trying to be pumped to the engine. It wasn't at all. To say the least, I am planning on a water pump rebuild. My question is, what am I expecting to find when I pull the lower unit? For now it looks as though something is blocking the water between the impeller and the engine or the impeller is not spinning anymore. I assumed that if the impeller was failing it would at least pump a small quantity of water. I did a flow check 2 weeks ago into a bucket and it was pumping very well. Now the cooling line is bone-dry.

I've had nothing but problems this summer with this boat it seems. I get one problem fixed, and something else seems to pop up. I figure by the time I get this damn thing working properly, and after all the stuff I have learned about this engine and outdrive, I could be on my way to becoming a Marine Mechanic! :D

As always, any feedback is very much greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Jason

Re: Pre-Alpha Cooling System Failure

If your prop is turning so is your pump. you take the lower half of the outdrive off ( do not forget bolt in trim tab) and check the pump and housing. If it looks great you must have a blockage in the tube or the hose that goes into the housing. do a search here and it will tell you step by step if you find part of the impeller missing you will need to back flush that hose you took off till you find all of it. ( and maybe some from the past)
