Pre alpha outdrive and gimbal fitting

My friend decided to restore a boat and he has a 3L 4 cylinder Mercruiser engine. It is 1990 or 91 so it was originally with Alpha one gen 1 outdrive and an old coupler. I found him a pre alpha outdrive with gimbal and trim tabs, but not sure if it will fit. Also im not sure how we can check out if the outdrive is working well and does not have problems, without taking it to mechanic. Any suggestions are welcome

Ayuh,...... Depends on just how "Pre-" it is,......

For the drive, inspect the oil, turn it by hand, 'n roll the dice,......

Thank you, my friend after some deliberation decided to wait till he can get an Alpha One Gen 2 setup
