pre-alpha outdrive install seal/gasket order?

Trying to re-install a rebuilt pre-alpha outdrive onto my 470 Mercruiser. alignment and first gear and etc are cool. I don't understand where the large (~4 inch) o-ring goes relative to the paper gasket. First I had the 0-ring on the upper unit, and hung the paper gasket on the bolt studs. Now I tried hanging the paper gasket on the upper unit, and then sliding the o-ring on, which was nice to hold things together. But where does all that o-ring material go? I can't imagine that it gets smashed flat enough to allow the water passage (small o-ring to seal), but there's no relief groove around the bell housing or the upper unit. Will it smash flat enough as I keep tightening? Or is there enough gap between the round upper unit and the round bell housing opening?
If this is too hard to imagine, please ask questions. Desparately hoping to get to the lake tomorrow. Thanks!

someplace in my posts is a link for the manual #6 for your drive.
1 Get some bellows adhesive or weatherstrip adhesive and GLUE the big rubber ring in place in the housing. Coat with glue and install to the stop. grease or adhesive will hold the water inlet O ring in place.install gasket,, install drive.

okay, so on the attached, 34 and 35 are wrong, but 36 is correct? Apparently my expert mechanic told me exactly wrongly. Thanks for the link to the manual. It was much more clear than 3A-19 in manual 4.DSC02334.JPGDSC02336.JPGDSC02335.JPGDSC02334.JPGDSC02336.JPGDSC02335.JPG
