Hi guys

I have stripped down the trim/tilt motor - to find the armature is covered in oil.

I have checked the manual to find the troubleshoot solution - and under the problem 'Oil in Motor' the solution/diagnosis is 'Vent Screw Closed'

New to Mercs - and trim pumps in general - but surely the Vent screw is supposed to be closed??

Any ideas anyone please?

Cheers again guys.

Cheers Doc

can you elaborate a bit please buddy?

why if its open doesn't oil spew out when operating pump and causing pressure?

and why would it being shut cause the oil to shoot up the armature?

mines not here to look at - its on the boat - but is it actually a closeable vent screw? if so why or when would you ever close it?

cheers bud

if it is a really old motor of the 3w prestolite variety then oil on armature can be caused by the shaft seal (usually a size 011 oring) being worn out or the armature being pitted. The oil will soften the brushes and brush card holder. It should be fixed.

The res. just holds the oil . the pump dips down into it .Once filled to the proper level and rams bled, oil level should be down from the fill hole about an 1 -1/2 .Needs the vent in case it expands.Say you filled it without cycling the rams, made everything tight, lowered the rams and oil is forced back into the res.Has to get out somplace. Either the vent screw and it overflows into the bilge or up the armature shaft past the O ring.

C is the height from the bottom plate to the top of the res housing.

above and beyond Doc - mega mega grateful mate cheers.

final question on it - is it conceivable reinstall the reservoir and all pipework, leave the motor off and use an electric screwdriver to set the leg where i want it - its a Prestolite pump as you know - high pressure - low volume.

we only potter about on the river so never need to adjust on the move - would be nice to be able to lift the leg when docking as it gets quite shallow.

cheers again all :)
