Re: Pre-alpha to alpha

have a look here:
http://www.mercstuff.com/drive_idprealpha.htm

you can bolt a Alpha one lower or upper to an earlier lower or upper depending on HOW OLD we are talking about, (or) vise versa,

You can not disassemble a Alpha One lower and install the components in a earlier lower unit. They are not compatable.

The halves will mate, but components inside will not.

in my inexpert opinion. ;)

i don't know if this helps but this is the serial that is on the side of the outdrive (2602756). As far as how old it seem to be what came stock with the boat. I'm trying to figure out if I can buy an entire alpha one setup gimbal and all and have it match the bolt holes and such in my transom or are they diffrent.

Ayuh,... So what year is the boat,..??

The holes should all line up, if not, you may need to redrill a couple...
No big deal either way...

Not busting your chops, but that's two different questions, which may be why you are having difficulty finding an answer.

The short answer to both questions however is "yes."

If you simply want to get an alpha outdrive and bolt it onto your existing transom assembly, the chances are good it will work. You will have to verify you have the correct gear ratio and driveshaft length, but it can work.

If you want to replace the entire transom assembly, then yes, that will work too. You will need to change the inner transom plate as well as the two are not compatible.

Ayuh,... Why not,..??

For a 1966, you'll need to swap out the Whole drive, from the rear motor mounts back...
That'll include redrilling atleast 2 of the transom holes...
Then your motor may/ probably won't mount up to the new inner transom plate...
So,... You'll need a new flywheel cover for the motor to attach to the drive...
Then the exhaust manifold won't line up,..
So,.. You'll need a new exhaust manifold...

Basically, you need a new Complete driveline, from the pulleys to the prop....

Re: Pre-alpha to alpha

Let me start by saying thanks for all the advice and direction it is much appreciated! Man that sounds like a lot of extra $$$ and possibly unneeded time. If the drive itself seems to be in pretty good condition and will operate without major repair would it make since to upgrade to a later model? Also while I've got some knowledgeable attention it seems, is there a way to test the trim motor to make sure it is in good shape while its not attached to the drive? I'm sorry for all the questions I'm just really excited and wont get my manual until Tuesday and am getting restless not being able to troubleshoot any possible problems that will need to be fixed. I will post the engine serial number tomorrow when I get out there to look at it maybe you guys can give me some direction on that task as well.
