I have a 1981 140HP merc with a pre-Alpha out drive, 5874902-198R, and its shot. The vertical and prop drive shafts are seriously worn where the seals ride on the shaft.....In my local paper there is a used Alpha 1 drive, Will it work in place of the pre-Alpha? I striped down the old unit because I saw rust on the top bearings and would not take a chance, I purchased the tools to do the job but when I saw the condition of the shafts I got totally discouraged.

I think there may be an issue with the length of the input shaft, some are nine and some are twelve inches in length. I don't remember which is which, you may try a search on the subject as this website is where I saw the info...I think "Bondo" posted it a while back.. good luck.

Flashback is right! Make sure that the one you buy is the same length! The archives are not archiving, yet.....Make sure that it looks the same (physically) on the outside....Only the shaft could be different (outside)& like I said....1.98:1.......JK
