Pre Alpha trim motor inop!!

Hi all, this is my first thread. I just bought an 81 Citiation, 120 Mercruiser 4cyl. Sterndrive. It runs well. Having a problem with the tilt/trim. It was going up but not down. Apparently the PO was jumping off the solenoid to get it to go down. It only has one solenoid in front of the pump motor. I've seen this same setup with one and some with two. Just confused as it has three wires, black=ground, blue=up, and green=down. Blue was Hooke up to the solenoid and green was grounded???? Anyways I was on the water when everything decided to stop. No up or down. I isolated the motor, no solenoids at all just straight power to blue and green. After ungrounding green of course. But now blue and green ARC HARD. Like touching the battery terminals together. I'm kind of leaning toward my motor is burned up from the hack job wiring. Any help is appreciated.

You might have a blown fuse. Same thing happened to me when I accidentally touched a screwdriver to two terminals and they sparked like crazy. The fuse is 90 amp, right on the solenoid. A cable comes right from the battery into the fuse.

You need manual #4... Page 5B-1... Nice little electrical circus diagram of the entire single solenoid trim system...

I guess it doesn't matter anymore. I took it off. The cap came off with the brushes inside. Took everything out and found the black ground wire had come loose and was grounding ou to the wraps. Unfortunately the wire has been burned to short to reach the brushes terminal now. So tomorrow I'm going to attempt to solder on a new wire and try to fix this thing as the marina want $500 JUST for this motor and I've found new ones on eBay for under a bill. They are generic pics though so not to sure about it.


Anyways when I removed the brushes end cap a little ball bearing fell out and not to sure where it goes. I've seen the brushes kit and I think it come with a new ball. Does anyone know where at in the cap it goes???

If you have a look at the top of the armature shaft you'll see a small hollow... That's where the ball fits...
