just destroyed my pre-alpha (gen 1) upper unit. apparently there was no fluid as it is dry as a bone and the main drive gear is shredded. good news, i got a fresh upper and lower, just for s/g i took the inspection cap off the new one, basically dry, oil residue on the gears but not full like i would have expected like a rear end in a car. Now im scared to run it as i cant afford to go through 2 uppers in a week. Can anyone tell me how my upper is lubricated? i would imagine that the lower must feed the upper??? can anyone put my mind at ease? thank you!

Ayuh,....

A Mod.1 is a Mod.1,.... Pre-alpha if you wish,... But nothing to do with Gen.I...

All Alphas(including the Mod.1s, Pre-Alphas) are Filled from the Bottom Fill/ Drain plug, til it runs out the Top Vent Plug.....
Matter of Fact,... All outdrives are filled that way...

Re: pre alpha upper unit

Your big problem right now is that stuff from the old upper is NOW in the lower  which is BAD

Re: pre alpha upper unit

Both upper and lower are newly rebuilt, my old stuff is by the wayside, so do i fill the lower vent till it comes out the vent on the upper unit or do i split them and fill till the oil comes out of the top vent on the lower unit?

Do not separete the upper & lower halves....
Fill from the bottom until the lube comes out of the top vent......
Put the vent plug in with a new seal......
Remove the pump fitting, & quicly install the fill plug (with new seal).....
The amount of lube lost is insignificant, as long as you don't fumble too much.....
It takes approx. 1 liter to fill, slightly more than a quart, so get two......;)
