preload pin lower unit compatibility

I am trying to assemble my sterndrive. The lower unit is a fresh older unit with the preload pin on top. The top is a new SE106. When I get them together, there is about a 1/4 in gap between the halves because of the preload pin.

Is this telling me that the upper and the lower are incompatible or should I use the hardware to pull them together.....assuming that the preload pin would compress that far, and also assuming that would apply the correct preload.

Thanks,

No, something else is wrong with your assembly like not having the upper shoe located correctly on the lower splined shaft

I even tried removing the brass shift lever to make sure that was not causing my problem. The upper came back down to the exact same spot....about 1/4 in apart.

It feels like it is resting on something in the center, like near the water pump or the vertical shaft from the gear housing.

I have a helper and we have tried to assemble it 10 times it seems......just cannot get that last 1/4 inch.

Check to make sure the locating pin in the rear of the drive is mating with the hole in se106 unit.
Check to make sure you applied grease to the water pump grommet seal.in the upper pump cover. If left dry it could be where the resistance is

Finally figured out the problem. The copper pipe water tube that came with the SE106 was a little bit to wide to seat all the way own into the lower. I used the copper pipe from my old upper and it went right together.

I guess that is the nature of dealing with aftermarket parts........
