I recently purchased an 87 kingfisher with 72 50hp evinrude hydro electric. This is my first boat and I'm pretty much clueless about boats.

The local boat shops don't carry the premium blend type c oil. I was told O'Reillys has it in stock but haven't checked yet. Does it matter what brand I use as long as it says Premium Blend type C? Is there a good internet source for the oil?

Also, What is the best oil to use for the gasoline/oil mixture?

Thanks for your help.

I am not sure if O/rilleys sells it. I get mine from my local boat dealer. I have a 1972- 85 hp evinrude and I have to buy two to fill it up.

Don't use substitutes for premium blend, they can ruin the lower unit.

The Oil is available in:

10 Oz tube part # 0775607;
16 Oz plastic bottle # 0775608;
32 Oz bottle # 0775609;
1 Gal #0172819;
5 Gal # 0172832;

Don't get confused on this particular oil. It is a property of OMC/BRP and is not available except under their label.

There are many many product with "C" and "Premium" in there names and they are all wrong for your gearcase.

I just bought mine at a local boat dealer. It's a Johnson brand and says right on the bottle that it's used for these hydro-electric shift motors. 7 bucks for I believe a 33oz bottle.

You're getting good advice here - these lower units (the hydro-electric ones) are just too hard to find in good shape to risk causing a problem with yours by using the wrong gear lube. Go to your local OMC/BRP dealer and tell them what motor you have and let them provide you with the correct lube. While you are at it, buy a couple of new o-rings for the drain and vent plugs. When you change your lube, be sure to replace the old o-rings too.

Here's another tip ... I had been buying my 2-stroke oil at Walmart because they sell Pennzoil Premium Blend in 2.5 gallon jugs for a little under $34.00. This is a very good oil and I have run it in a number of OMC motors, ranging from late 50s models to my 1972 65hp Johnson, with excellent result. But, I was buying some parts at my dealer yesterday and discovered that I can buy OMC/BRP's premium blended systhetic in bulk at $13.00/gallon. That means I can buy a superior synthetic blend, while supporting the dealer that is always available for advice and other kinds of help, for a little less than what I have been paying at Wally World. That's a deal I like and from now on, I will be showing up at my OMC/BRP dealer every so often, with a small gas can that has oil "2-Stroke Oil Only" written on the side!
