Premix, or oil inject?

I have a 94 Johnson 65 Jet (90 powerhead) 4-Cylinder cross-flow that has the original oil injection that seems to be working. How does one know if it is not working (aside from the alarm...assuming that works)?<br /><br />What is everyones feeling about not using the oil injection and using a pre-mix instead? This way I know the cylinders are getting oil.<br /><br />Any help is appreciated.<br /><br />Fishburn

Fishburn.....Welcome aboard. There's nothing wrong with pre-mixing, if you want to deal with it, but if your VRO is working, might as well use it. The best, and safest, way to check if it's working is to just premix your first tank of fuel, and fill up your oil resevoir also. Go out and run around and keep your eye on the oil level in your resevoir, if it's dropping then you using oil out of it. VRO's are a pretty good and reliable system, don't beleive the hype about them.

To add to Crickets post....do NOT assume the alarms work. Check them and make sure they work. On your engine, you have three.....overheat, low oil in the reservoir and restricted/no oil flow. All are very easy to test.

Thenks gentlemen, I very much appreciate the information. The model number of my motor is J90JLEOR (I didn't have that info yesterday). I have ran about 20 gallons of gas through the motor and have only seen a drop in the oil tank of about 1.5 inches. When I am running the motor, every 20 minutes or so I hear one beep out of the system is this normal?<br /><br />Also OBJ, you mentioned that I have sensors and alarms for overheat and low oil, and restricted flow. Is this still true given the model number I listed above?<br /><br />After buying the motor, on the first use, I noticed that not much water was coming out of the "tell tale", and after a while...no water. The engine never seemed to overheat, but I was worried so I checked for blockage in the tell tale line and elbow where the water comes out of the "block" and did not locate any obstructions. I removed the water pump and replaced the whole water pump assembly, I ran it in a tank yeaterday and it did the same thing...a little water came out for the first minute, and started to get warm then it quit flowing. I shut it down and removed the thermostats and will be replacing them today. I also blew air bach through the tell tale (with the thermostats out and the cover off) and could see/feel ait flowing. Is there somehting I am missing? Shouldn't the tell tale be spitting water all the time? Does the hot water need to activate the thermostats before the water will flow out the tell tale?<br /><br />Thanks alot for your help guys, I very much appreciate it. I just want to get my young boys on the water to fish.
