While patiently (impatiently) waiting for spring, I am thinking about what I want to do to my '89 88HP SPL Rude! Would like to put new plug wires on, is there a good site to order from?
Also, last year I checked the battery voltage, with the engine running and without; the voltage didn't change so I guess I need to fix the charging system. I have a manual, should I go ahead and order the rectifier when I order the plug wires? What are the chances the problem is being caused by the rectifier?

Thanks,

Tony

Howdy, FBT.

You certainly can't do harm by replacing the wires and rectifier, but there is no assurance that it will fix anything.

Use your manual to troubleshoot the charging system, then change the failed part, whatever it may be.

Good luck. :)

Another thing I want to work on is the warning horn, it doesn't appear to work. Is it supposed to go on when the key is initially turned on as a test for the horn? Right now it doesn't come on at all...I have installed a temp gauge to monitor the temp. What are the functions of the horn on my '89 88SPL?

On the Special, it just monitors temperature. It should beep once when you turn the key on. You can check it by seperating the wire to each of the sending units on the heads and grounding it. The horn should sound. If neither side sounds the horn, it's bad. With a temperature gauge, you don't really need it except as an alert.
