Preparing for 1st Boat Restoration!

Hey all, sorry to bother but I am in dire need of help! I've only had one boat in my lifetime, and that was a 14' flatbottom aluminum boat with a max capactiy of 3 people. I had a small MINN Kota trolling motor, so nothing big!

I'm going to start my first boat restoration on an older 16' 265 FS that a family friend gave to me. I don't have pics ATM (will within the next couple of days). I would consider the boat as a whole in decent condition. It has a 70 hp Johnson motor. Once I got inside I noticed there was a weakspot in the center flooring. I have not yet ripped up the carpet or gutted the wood, but once I rip up the carpet, how do I determine what step needs to be done next? Sorry for the newbery :/ (I'm an avid fisherman, just never had a bassboat!) Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, CJ

I guess people are waiting for some pics before replying.

Good luck with it!

Re: Preparing for 1st Boat Restoration!

Post pix of the boat before the demo starts.

May need to build a cradle to fully support hull as you dismantle it. Removing the structure (deck & stringers) rotten or not, removes the hull's primary support system.

Bass boats are atypical and don't necessarily follow the following graphics exactly, but generally, WOG's transom stringer & deck will give you most of the info you need to know about what lies ahead: "Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms"

GT's currently the only bass boat resto I can think of right off, but if your's is more of a Fish&Ski (F/S) type hull, it is much more likely to be similar to many of the resto's.

Read thru some resto threads. Lots of good info in most of them. No matter the boat type or hull style, most are generally put together the same.

Thanks for the input already! I actually had to go to several training workshops (I'm a teacher/coach) but I'm going to get my boat from my mom's this weekend and I'll start posting pictures (in turn I will need SEVERAL inputs as to what exactly ya'll should think be best). This is a TEAM effort, simply because I'm too retarded to do it myself! LOL! THanks in advance, and I'll post pictures tomorrow (Thursday evening). Hope all is well with everyone's restoration!:):)

Retarted people don't ask questions, so I guess that puts you in the smart catagory. I spent 6 months reading before I started. That was enough for me to have a clue. There is no telling what you will find once you open up the deck and transom. That's why we all want to see pictures so we know what you are talking about. Not only that people use different terms for the part. Pictures save on the confusion.

Good for you! You are getting into fiberglass boating, IMO, in the best way possible. You will have an excellent boat you know inside and out, and you will be proud of it! Sounds like you don't have anything in it yet, so for 1500-3000$ you will have a great boat! I am in a restoration myself, and I can truly say this place and these people can get you through it, regardless of your prior experience.

Get a corner up however necessary, grab it with a strong grip, and pull!

Cowboy, you haven't posted in some time. Did you let that carpet beat you up?
