Preping an OB that has sat for 18 months?

Hello
New to this interesting forum. Hoping for some instructions.

It is a 1990 Force 90hp. Has shop receipts over $2500 of lower unit and power head rebuilds 18 months ago.

Original to a '90 boat I hope to buy.
Am told it has not been run since the shop work.
I only have limited experience with a Merc I/O, nothing on OBs.

Could anyone walk me thru the necessary prep work needed before I would even attempt to crank this dry engine?

I know to clean the fuel tank and seperater.
My concerns are maybe I should pull the plugs and shoot some oil into the cylinders.

Would there be anything else?

Also have not seen the shop receipt yet but $2500 seems that would be good for any complete rebuild; am I right on that?

Thanks for any input.

Check out the Engine FAQ Forum, Charlie. "Awakening a sleeping outboard" should do the trick.

Good luck. :)

18 months, has not been run since rebuild, use 25/1 oil mixture 1st 2 tanks of fuel for breaking in the new stuff.. i would be suspect of the impeller, having sat 18 months dry. oil soak will not hurt, just before start remove plugs and blow excess oil out of cylinders, put a towel over the holes as it will blow oil everywhere. follow JB"s advice.

While I'm sure I'll get blasted from half the forum that believes the engines must be rebuilt....I've had more than one outboard that fired up happily after two or three pulls and ran like a bat outta hell long afterwards. In each case, I knew the engines well. Those I didn't I still fired up and went from there.
