Ya know, I was afraid you may say that. But how does presence of compression effect the power pack?

I wish I could tell you for certain, but unfortunately, this one is out of my mechanical know-how. I had to take it in to the shop. The distributor sent the wrong pack and it's still at the marine, so I might be able to talk to my mech and if he doesn't talk over my head, I'll try to pass along the info.

Finally broke down and put boat in shop. Had to prove whether or not problem was switchbox as just too expensive to experiment. Mechanic says there is low voltage from stator. He is going to get one in and try that. Spark is way too weak to run engine. Sad part is that the new stator is no cheaper than the switchbox.

Re: PreSeason blues......

Yeah, I meant to update on this topic instead of another one that I had responded to. I ended up putting another CD unit on and it ran great for a couple of hours at WOT, but ended up losing a cylinder (number two again and number one is weak), so it looks like it is indeed the stator on mine as well.

Check ebay as far as that stuff goes. I just picked up a stator, power pack and three coils, all guaranteed to work for $171 for the whole thing. $68 for the stator, $74 for the power pack and $29 for the three coils, including shipping.

Failing that, try www.seilermarine.com for the stator.

I am *not* looking forward to taking that flywheel off myself, even with a manual. It doesn't sound easy. :( So if anyone has any suggestions...

Sorry for your bad luck. Good price on parts though, but I am a bit leary of buying parts like that on ebay, afraid of throwing good money after bad. Appartenly, Merc does not have the origional stator, but a Merc stator with an adapter kit. Mechanic is going to give me a bit of a deal on the whole job so I will stick with him to complete it. I have no real problem paying for a mechanic like this who is willing to talk to me and work with me over his shoulder. I know enough to feel he is on the level. I just hate the 'secret' ones that only work behind closed doors.

Re: PreSeason blues......

Just to update this topic, those parts I got off ebay did the trick. It was indeed the stator that was causing the power packs to go bad. Tried the old power pack with the stator I got off ebay and still didn't have the spark I needed.

Replaced it with the ebay power pack and the thing worked perfectly.

The guy's ebay username is "outboardpart" and I highly recommend him. Good communication throughout the whole process and when I thought that one of the parts I ordered was wrong (which turned out not to be the case) he was ready to help me out and make things right.

Something to watch for and save you guys and gals some money. :)
