I try to keep my posts here non-political but come on, Can't we find better things to spend our tax money on? Like homelessness, hurricane relief, or better boat ramps! It is MHO that we are spending far too much in helping countries that hate us and democracy in general, and not enough at home.

It's our government's response to Hezbollah's handing out money.

The cost of rebuilding homes is estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars and Hezbollah — whose social support network is a main reason for the loyalty it commands — was quick to offer help.

Looks like we picked up the whole bill.

Yeah, that's ridiculous! Hey Mr. Bush, can you help out your own country man here. I can use 20 bucks to replace the Lucky Craft crank bait that I lost last weekend.:'(

Foreign aid is a weird thing.
Companies in the USA will build products which will be sent to Lebanon,or there are surplus materials here that are no longer used.It may well be those that are sent abroad.
It is never a check for x million dollars.
Factories in America using US labor mostly profit from foreign aid.
As in most other international dealings, nothing is as it seems.

Spending money on things like the homeless, hurricane relief and better boat ramps is determined as entitlements, doing the same for foreign countries is determined as aid.
Anyway 230 million is a drop in the bucket when one considers that the Saudis have earmarked one and a half billion dollars, and the Iranians have proposed an open checkbook policy.
We are being out spent and politically out-maneuvered by the opposing interests in this tragic human debacle.

Bush is sending aid to Lebanon? Aren't they harboring terrorists in Lebanon? Aren't terrorists our enemies?

Obviously this is a situation where you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Federal aid for Katrina victims is $110 BILLION dollars, Dan.

That is about 500 times as much as we are offering Lebanon.

Are you not paying attention or are you just looking for things to gripe about?

Yep, 230 Million is a drop in the bucket.

If we are serious about supporting fledgling democracies (We have spent $300 + billion in Iraq!) we have to get prepared for big bills. This is peanuts, compared to the damage inflicted by the recent war over there.

I think this is the least we should be doing.

I have paid attention and yes it is just a gripe! What is eatting my shorts the most is this is a country filled with groups and individuals that seriously dislike America and what we stand for.

To give them anything at all is not right when there is plenty that that $230 Million could do right here.
Thats my Rant and I am sticking to it!

I for one, am very happy anytime W sends money elsewhere. He's just a good ole boy trying to help a terrorist out. We have a history of that, don't we?

Many people here do not know much about Lebanon. There are many Christians living in lebanon, it isnt a Muslim stronghold.

The Lebanon govt is OK, its Hezbolla that is the bad guys.

Didn't the Lebanese government contract out the defense of S. Lebanon to Hezbolla?

And what's up with "Hezbolla" anyway...sounds like some kinda chick rock band festival or something!

That's what I've been thinking.

Bush deserves critisism for this one.

I disagree with that comment, the president is doing the right thing, we cannot simply allow the extremists to be the ones funding the rebuilding, for they will be in control of the hearts and minds, 230 million is a miniscule amount to spend on this endeavor, however its a start, what would be nice is to see the other developed nations step up to the plate and do the same especially at the education level, we must not leave any opening for countries like Iran to step into, we have seen the fruits from that tree, it ain't a pretty sight.

where is the Lebanese government? giving these terrorists free reign to move about their country? why are we sending money instead of troops?

are we at war with terrorism or aren't we?

I think he's taking the "let's all hug" stand here. Ya know, let's talk and we'll all be friends.
He has to do this even though he knows that tactic never works with some folks.
So good for him, even though I'd like water instead of a ramp.

One must look at the big picture, this president is doing the best that he can with the resources available, its arguable that thats not good enough, nevertheless we must play the hand which we are dealt.
In nov 2008 we will once again have the chance to choose a leader behind whose decisions affects foriegn policy by which we must stand, regardless of ones domestic political bias.
