This is one of those issue I don't know what to say. The president needs to be protected, and in its simplists form, the presidency is just a job, they have a right to travel for personal reasons. But Air Force one is a pricey bird to keep in the air. I am not sure AF1 brings in any more money so it provides no advantage but I guess I would need about 4 years unfettered access to it to come to a clear opinion.

This has to go under the necessary evil category.

I like that governor Sanford. My kind of guy.

Anyones issue with this is directly connected to your party/political leaning.

It can be a campaign issue, yet very sleazy, since they all do it. Only some admit.

I dont think a standing president should be allowed to campain for anyone other than himself period. once they are Ex president they can do as they please but they will still get the secret service protection.

yes I do sometimes get off the thread topic.
yes the above chided me yet thoughtfully stayed on topic rather than ridicule my with facts to dispute my claims of incompetancy.

Why not? Ex - Presidents, and VP never used to talk about standing Presidents, until now.

Facts about what?
Libs will never face the facts, unless they are the "facts" they want to say or quote.
Now I am off topic, ( bad Eric) but that was not an insult to you directly, it was towards all the left. The Right has a voice too, like it or not. We're not taking it laying down and getting kicked anymore, we're standing up for what WE think.
I respect all opinions, but in turn, mine must be respected as well.

What is the point?

That we don't live in a perfect world?

When did people figure that one out?

Let me see if I can comment on the topics covered so far:

1) Yep, we have been picking up the tab for political junkets by whoever is in office for a long, long time. Should there be a limit?
Probably. I like the "Pigs at the trough" statement.

2) Sounds like South Carolina has someone that at least wants to tackle budget issues. Kind of reminds me of stories I've read of Harry Truman.

3) Post tenure protection of former presidents. Has to be that way. Can you imagine the repercusions if a vengeful group of people were to kidnap or harm two or three former presidents on the same day? They served our country and we owe it to them to secure their lives.

4) Ex presidents and Vice Presidents never used to talk about standing presidents until now.
History does not bear that out. Lincoln took a lot of flack from former presidents during the civil war. Theodore Roosevelt called the sitting president at that time a "Fathead". Ike made negative comments concerning Kennedy. Bush Sr. made comments about the handling of Somalia by Clinton.
Below is a link that lists some of Bush Sr comments.

We fell to recognize what our government subsidies as we seem to focus on social welfare for the poor and needy as the only programs. Let us look at a few others:

Highways Trucking certainly does not pay its way on this.

Rails

Farming maybe the largest

Oil Industry check out the tax laws in this area

Travel Expenses for elected officials, try writing off your cost of traveling back and forth to work

Doctors ever wonder if doctors actually pay the cost of medical schools

Lawyers etc same story

And it goes on and on. Like it or not we are very socialistic but tend to gripe when it is for the poor.

I simply must disagree, AK...it is just the GOP doing it...well...I guess...as a famous infamous politician once said, "depends on what the definition of the word 'is' is."

...
Did you complain about Pres Clinton campaigning for Al Gore and using OUR money to do it?
...

Very interesting use of the word "OUR" - could mean ours as in mine and yours and every taxpayers' - but emphasized with caps like that - almost seems as though you mean some subset of American taxpayers...hmmmmm. But to answer your question, no, in all the time this has been going on this is the first time I've complained. No, actually, it doesn't appear as though I've complained at all, not yet. Just reported. So, here goes...HEY Y'ALL CUT THAT **** OUT!

But it's kind of hard to get all worked up about it...I mean, when you're spending $1,500,000,000.00 per week pursuing a war with no end in sight, what's a couple million here or there?

...
Or is it only a bad thing (in your eyes) when a GOP POTUS does it?

GOPPOTUS STOPPOTUS HIPPOPOTUS

Is that a rhetorical question? No matter, gives me an opportunity to state, unequivocally:

Nope, this is strictly an apolitical bipartisan objection to tax money spent on campaigns. OK maybe except for POTUS's own reelection.

I have documentary evidence...I've never once checked the $1 box on my tax return no matter who was in office!

Dont ever forget the golden rule.

He who has all the gold makes the rules.

They should all be embarrased as to how they spend our hard earned money.
