I have a 1998 (I think) Mercury 50 HP Big Foot Four Stroke with over 500 Hrs on it. (On a pontoon) It was the first year for the Mercury Four Stroke and I think Yamaha actually made it for Mercury. This engine has run flawlessly for me until last night when a press fit elbow that goes into the top carb where the fuel line attaches just fell out. I was in the middle of the lake and tried pressing it in by hand and it would not stay in until I twisted it a little. I called the dealer this morning and they are talking about a carb replacement !! I find it hard to beleive a carb replacement is in order. I plan on taking the carb out tonight and looking at it closer but was wondering if there is a adhesive I could use ?

You can use Loctite Retaining Compound 638 or 680 and re-install fitting. Let it dry and your good to go. Your autoparts store should be able to get it for you.
They have no choice but to recomend carb replacement due to any liabilities shouyld a repair fail and the motor burn.

But now that I disclaim any responsability for your actions,

I'm not looking at your particular issue but from my previous experience with carb inlet pressed fittings,

Usually if allowed to dry the treated with a small amount of red or green locktite making sure none enters the fuel passage,

then by tapping on the fitting to make sure it seats firmly,

And sometimes (left to the individual job) I may even stake (centerpunch around perimiter of alluminum support area) once or twice with a semi sharp angled awl and small hammer.

The trick is to get the fitting and the hole completely free of fuel and oil. I've used Brake Clean or Electra Clean spray which evaporates.

It'll work, been there done that. Besides, if it doesnt you really havent lost much except time.

Just let it cure and keep an eye on it for leaks.
