pressure tank replacement?

Hey guys,
I've got a 1958 sea horse 10 that runs great thanks to your help last year, but I've got questions about the tank. My boat has a compartment for tank storage, but the pressure tank is too tall to fit in by about 1-1.5 inches.
-Can a newer style tank be retro-fit to be able to hold pressure?
-How much pressure do these tanks hold?
-Does the tank need to be metal?
-Are there any styles other than this type? (this pic is not "my" tank, but it is the same style as mine)

Re: pressure tank replacement?

Hello Kevin.
You do not want to try to make a plastic pressurized tank. The metal one has a safety valve that makes sure that there is only 4 pounds of pressure inside the metal walls.A plastic one would blow up like a balloon and go boom! You have the alternative of changing to a fuel pump on your outboard.then you can use the lower plastic tanks.
If you are very lucky you may be able to find a 3 gallon lowslung metal pressure tank, but I have not seen one of those in 20 years.

Re: pressure tank replacement?

thanks rolmops,
Would it be possible to put such a safety valve on a custom metal tank, either a new one or a valve off another tank? A friend of mine said he could fabricate a tank for me out fo 1/8" stainless. If so, where can I get one, how much, and is there any coating needed on stainless steel to protect against gasoline?

What exactly am I in for if I try to go to a fuel pump?

Please add anything else I may need to know!
-kevin

He should make a lower version of the one you have.
The black part of your tank can be unscrewed and transferred to whatever he makes.I do not know what insurance (if any)people would have to say about this.
As for a fuel pump. You just take a fuel pump off an old engine(early 60s) and install it on your engine. The Seloc volume one has a very detailed description about this process. There are a few threads about it as well.
The chief difference between the 2 systems is that yours works on pressure and the pump works on a vacuum system supplied by your engine. Both deliver fuel equally well.

AWESOME!

How about redoing seals on the black part of the tank? It's probably a good time to do it, can I get that from NAPA or another Sierra dealer?

Just to double check my formula for the new tank---

L*W*H/231=gallons

-Correct?

-Also, any word on a coating or sealer on the stainless?
-What if I go with regular steel(cheaper), then would I need to coat it and with what?

Thanks again Gas Tank Guru!

-Kevin

Re: pressure tank replacement?

You can usually get all the seals in packages on ebay. There are always a few for sale. Many OMC dealers stock them as well.Napa does too,but it takes time. The original fuel tank is not stainless. It has a special varnish coating on the inside. You should be able to get this in a good car paint store. The way to paint it is by pouring a can inside and shaking it in all directions to make sure everything is covered. You should not have any of the black part of your tank in this stuff because it will clog it up.When you are done shaking just drain and let it dry.
Installing a pump is probably cheaper than building another tank.If you are interested I can put a fuel pump on ebay.Just let me know.
Whatever you do,do not use a low pressure electric inline fuel pump. They do not shut off when your engine does and fuel spills and fire are not far behind.

Re: pressure tank replacement?

rolmops,
is there anywhere I can read up on how to install a fuel pump--- as far as where to mount it on my motor, how to connect it, and where else I can get it? It's worth looking into if it will work as good as the original tank and save me money! I appreciate the offer to put one on ebay for me, but I'm still in the planning stage of this little problem. If I decide to go that route and can get it at a reasonable price from a local source, I'll give it a go. There are a few good sources for parts around me and I've dealt with them(and this motor)in the past! If I can't get it that way, I'll definitely take you up on your offer!

You wouldn't be able to give me either a part number or a better idea of exactly what I'm looking for, would you? I checked the iboats parts section and found ...

# 18-7353 Fuel Pump
# 18-7350 Fuel Pump
# 18-7351 Fuel Pump
# 18-7352 Fuel Pump

am I getting hotter or colder?

The motor is a 1958 Johnson Sea Hores 10 model no. QD-19 and serial no. 1689979.

Thanks for all your halp so far! The service you provide newbies like me is invaluable!

-Kevin

There is a book called "seloc volume one" it is for 2 cylinder engines up to 40 horse from 1956 to 1972.
This book has a very detailed explanation for changing to a fuel pump. You can get this book by clicking on the left bottom of the page where it says "manuals"

You may be able to find a 4 gal. pressure tank on eBay. That's what came with my '56 7.5hp.

Re: pressure tank replacement?

I have seen several custom tanks that use the top canister assembly off a regular 4 or 6 gallon tank. They work fine if the tank is well made. 1/8" stainless should be perfect.

Rebuild kits for the pressure tanks are available through vintageoutboard.com....

- Scott

Re: pressure tank replacement?

Well guys, no luck finding fuel pump for my motor. rolmops, you said you could put one on ebay for me---would that have the bypass plate with it, how much would I be looking at, and could you send it directly to me if I sent you a personal check, cashiers check, or money order?--(I don't like using my credit card online after someone charged $2400 onto it the last time I bought something)

Here is some info I found at duckworks.com on pressure tanks andfuel pump retros for vintage Evinrude/Johnson in the FAQ section. Maybe put it in the FAQ section...

--Hope to hear from you soon,

Kevin

Presssure Tank and Fuel Pump Info

Re: pressure tank replacement?

The one I have comes off a 1959 35 horse. It has everything you need to change your fuel supply system.I do not sell anything through this chatroom because it is owned by a company that has very clear rules about this sort of thing. But I will put it on ebay under Johnson Evinrude outboards. That way you also have more protection against possible fraud.

In this case I might have to make an exception.
--Kevin
