Pressure Tester

Greetings All,

For the past few months I have been studying up and reading all sorts of threads in preparation for working on my 1990 alpha 1 drive. I have most of the tools and am ready to go. The plan is to do the water pump, replace the bellows/hoses, new u-joints, gimbal bearing, and shift cable. So once all is said and done, looks like it might be a good idea to pressure/vacuum check the drive before I dip her back in the salt.

Here is the question: Can someone source me a cheap pressure/vacuum tester? Must be something available in the automotive outlets that would do the trick without too much modification. Thanks.

this is a old style merc. gear lub pump end (the part that screws into the drive) + the clear hose it came with. a plastic t fittin from the hardware store. a couple a hoses i had layin around. a gauge i had layin around that can read 0-15psi with probably fair accuracy. and a tire stem, removed the rubber so i had only the stem left. that plugs into that cheap a** chineze foot pump.....

the white thing is a vac. pump made for self bleeding of brake fluid from a auto brake system...... $30 or so from the auto parts store......

+ a few small hose clamps......

WOW, Your a crafty devil ziggy. I'm putting that in my bag of tricks. What should an outdrive hold for pressure/vacume max when testing? I hope no one objects to a question within anothers post, but if it might benefit the post starter it's probably ok? Not sure if it's a rule or not? Don?

Ziggy, that is just too cool! Thanks for the reply and great photo, have everything but the bleeder pump. If I remember right from previous posts I should be looking for 15lbs pressure over a few hours, rotate shaft every now and then, same thing for vacuum at 6lbs.

glad the pic helps folks...... that's what i think this iboats forum is all about. being able to help others. and for me, gettin help too as i've certainly had much help from folks here.....
so. i gotta snitch myself off. i'm not perticualarly crafty. i'm a copycat.... others have posted up pics of their pressure tester and i just copied them......
