pressure testing question

After reading numerous posts about the issue and studying my manual, I pulled my outdrive to find out where all my gear oil was going. Hey hey there it is in the u joint bellows and better yet there's pitting and a slight groove in the shaft of my yoke. Everything is going as planned so I thought I'd go ahead and pressure test before ordering parts. As soon as I put air in through the drain plug it came out around my ujoints as if there was nothing in the way to disturb the air flow. I ordered my yoke and an upper seal kit but I was wondering if there are any dummy issues I'm missing here and will my upper seal kit most likely allow the drive to hold some pressure? This is the first boat I've ever owned and the first outdrive I've ever seen taken off a boat so take it easy on me. :)

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Re: pressure testing question

Once you put the upper seal kit in, you'll need to pressure and vac test the drive again. As the first leak was so bad, the likelihood of seeing a second leak at the same time is remote. That said, I would think that the likelihood of a second leak is slim.

Remember, you need to vacuum test the drive as well as pressure test it....

With due respect pressure test absolutely. Mercruiser does not recomend vacuum testing on their outdrives.

And yoke seal wear is very, very, common on Mercs, usually replace yoke on most all reseal jobs I do.

Show me....

I have found many seals that passed pressure test, but failed vacuum test.... I ALWAYS pressure AND vac test all drives and outboard gearboxes I work on.
