Probably easier to find the Chevy points and cheaper. Don't see a problem using them.

Prestolite distributor points help

I'm having some problems getting points for my distributor installed and hope that someone can help me out. I've got a '77 OMC 235HP motor that has a Prestolite distributor. I was able to order the points for the distributor but they don't match my existing points and I'm not sure what's going on. I've double checked the part number for the model of my distributor and they all show the same points which I ordered. I'm not sure if a previous owner modified the distributor to use different points but these don't match and I can't figure out how to install them. I've tried finding other points to match my old ones but I haven't been able to find a match. I found a few that were close but they just won't work.

I've posted pictures below that show the problem. The first picture shows my existing point and the second picture shows the new points. As you can see, there isn't anywhere to attach the spring that provides tension to the points.

I'd appreciate it if someone could take a look at these pictures and let me know what I'm missing.

Old points:

See how the tension spring on the new points has nowhere to mount.

Re: Prestolite distributor points help

Some one has removed the insulator block from your dict and installed points from a GM 4 or 6 cyl engine for some reason, thats what the 2 holes are in the first picture, right below the wire stud on the pts--Bob

That dist looks a little cruddy inside... good time to inspect the timing advance weights below for corrosion and crud.

Re: Prestolite distributor points help

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I decided the easiest thing to do was to just convert the system to an electronic ignition.
