it makes sence ,,,it wont wick water ......is it dry enough to let the epoxy grab it...............should it be considered for transom replacement wood ............is there a grade of pressure treated wood that is dry enough from the factory/suppliers.........

Re: presure treated plywood for flooring and stringers .heck and transom

Most the stuff I get around here is dripping wet and warped. If you let it dry out indoors for a few months then epoxy sticks to it just fine (though some older publications will argue). Like any wood, it'll stick extra-good if you allow it to warm up a bit before applying the epoxy since that opens the wood's pores. Set it out in the sun sort of thing.
I can tell you pressure treating doesn't keep it from wicking water but rather it 'poisons' the wood to fungus, which is the dominant form of rot. It'll wick water just like any other ply once the CCA's solvent is all dried off.
Someone here mentioned holding the panel flat until it dried out - that's a good idea! But I would take a long, hard look at the quality of the panel before using it for a stringer. Those warped, damp, and heavily checked ones at my home center I wouldn't trust my own weight to. If you pick and choose you might find one that's good fer it though. Don't forget to check what you can see of the inner plys!

EDIT: BillP covers a lot of this in the 'What type of plywood for flooring?' topic.

Check with your lumber yard and see if they can get pressure treated plywood made from something harder than spruce or fir. I was reading an article that listed the most common woods used for ply. Some are common hardwoods.

Most of the strength in the plywood stringers in a boat come from the glass around them not the plywood you could use cardboard for frames if you could fixture till the glass drys

Given a choice between doing it cheap and doing it right, I recommend right.

Crab bait, apparently you have never looked at a higher performance hull to see how little it takes to hold a well designed hull that travels at 70 mph plus together. We have built several along the way and we have won some championships in APBA outboard classes. I resent your sarcasm when you don't even address the question that was asked. I stand by what I said,if done properly the stringers could be formed over cardboard. It is a common practice to form hulls over PVC plastic pipe cut in half.---Bob

4cyl, don't want to argue I made a statement, and stand by it, you may not have noticed but I did say well designed hull. In the first place I did not advise you or crab bait to use cardboard or PVC or anything else. Please use what ever you choose for your stringers.--Bob

On many boats the shape of the fiberglass is what contrubutes the majority of the strength, especially when using roving. That is not to say that wood is not important. The wood is used to form the shape of the glass and to absorb shock to make for a smoother ride. Refer to The Fiberglass Boat Repair Manual by Allan H. Viatses for more information.

This is true with the new AC2 treatment, if you can find CCA, Galvanized will also work.

Barnbldr,
We are still seeing CCA on the shelves here. Do you know when the drop dead date is for CCA?

Laddiesservice. I had my biggest laugh of marine design, building, and safety standards. I asked the USCG for a " backyard builders " SPEC. sheets. I thought it would be almost the same as a manufacturer of boats. No mention of safety of electric, fuel, tanks, structure, bulkheads , nothing. I am building to the manufacturer specifications. I would like to live.

Billp, I don't see any cca here anymore. (haven,t really looked for it tho.) but I can say this, I do some remodeling/handyman work for a living and ran a test on some ac2 lumber. nothin fancy, just shot some different nails into a couple of 2x6's and let it sit out in the weather over the winter. regular 3 inch steel nails were half gone in about 4 months. galvanized faired a little better. the coated deck screws are ok for the time being but if the coating goes then I imagine that the screw will follow shortly after.. and the aluminum flashing i sandwiched in-between was almost gone.. that ac2 stuff is definatly corrosive...

flashback,
The changeover was voluntary by the industry and limited to residential. Commercial use was ok. I don't know if this has changed though and haven't done research to find out yet. They recommend hot galv or stainless for the new process. Like anybody is going to use SS on house construction...just MAYBE they will use HOT galv instead of electro galv.
