Hello to you,
I have a quick question. I am thinking about buying a upgraded boat to replace my smaller boat. This new boat is a 1991 Chapparal 2000LS Bowrider with a 4.3liter V-6 Yamaha inboard/outboard with Yamaha outdrive. Anyway, I am use to working on my 88 H.P. SPL V-4 Evinrude Outboard, but I have never worked on an inbd on this new boat that looks like a car motor. My question is since this is a new boat to me what preventave maintenance would you recommend before taking this out into the water for the first time? What would you guys do is what I am asking before I run her on the lake for the first time? Thanks for your help, Bob

Well, it is essentially a car engine. The main thing is oil. Make sure the oil is full and clean. And pay attention to your gauges when you take it out.

Everything that applies to a car engine, applies to an inboard boat engine. Plugs, wires, distributor, fuel delivery, oil, power steering fluid (if boat has it), belts, pullies, hoses.

Ayuh,...... All I can say is,.....

Don't do it.......

Those Yamahas were only imported for a couple of years,.......
And,......
Capt. Ken is about the Only parts source for them in the Whole US of A........

If you want a bigger boat, with an I/O,....
Go find yourself a boat with either Volvo, or Mercruiser power......

Yamahas might be OK if you live somewhere besides America,......
But,......
Here,.... They're about as Handy as an old OMC.......

Welcome to the I/O world.
Like any "new to you" boat - if you don't have records, assume you've got to do it. The maintenance required for the 4.3L is largely the same as it would be for any I-4, V6, or V8.

Change the oil/filter.
Change the fuel filter, water seperator (if you have one).
If you've got a raw water filter, pull it off, inspect it, back flush it.
Change the raw water pump impeller (should be done every 1-2 years).
Basic tune up is distributor cap/rotor, plug wires, spark plugs (+gap).
If you're curious, check compression while the plugs are out.
Check and lube cable assemblies.
Change the out drive oil. Look for any indications of water mixing with the oil.
Check the rubber connections on the out drive - look for cracks or the beginning of wear at the bellows.

Bond-o I couldn't agree with you more.

I think part of the reason that some people do not fill it in is the false "internet security" issue.
Wouldn't want people to know where you are from in case they want to ???? who knows.
Many questions could have quicker, more thoroughly, more accurate info if the location of the person and therefore the environmental conditions they are in.

Oh well........ here's hoping.
