Thanks for all of the information you all are willing to share. I have learned so much in just a few days. We are first time boat buyers and will be purchasing a new pontoon from a local dealer. I have had a hard time finding any information on markups. I would prefer going into this process as a knowledgeable consumer. HELP!!!!!!!

Re: Price Negotiation

Boats, like many consumer products are only worth what someone's willing and able to pay for it. Some dealers lowball (discount) the sale but make the $$ up in volume and service. This can mean you get a good deal on the boat and they forget your name when you pull out of the parking lot as they are busy striking up a deal with the next customer. <br /><br />Obviously the happy medium is purchasing your boat at a fair price from a dealer that has a reputation of maintaining a mutual relationship with it's customers. <br /><br />I'm not familiar with the markup's but before purchasing my new boat last year I carefully observed pricing for a year or two before committing to a purchase. I noticed mid spring and throughout the prime boating season commanded the highest price. The fall and winter affords customers to shop around, putting favor in the hands of the customer and providing the dealer with a little better operating cash flow. I ended up purchasing my boat late fall with agreement to take delivery in the spring. This gave the dealer use of my deposit for expenses throughout the winter but saved me about 15% from what other dealers were retailing the package for. <br /><br />2004 Polar 2010 CC w/ Yamaha F150, Minn Kota Riptide 74 w/ autopilot & copilot. different areas of the country are going to be different. the model year you're buying will also make a difference, they should be willing to work more on getting rid of 04's.<br /><br />have you looked at used boat prices? that's part of a well-informed decision...in my opinion.<br /><br />i've seen 15% tossed around a bunch but there are so many particulars involved that a blanket number would be a guess.

One invaluable guide for used boats and motors is the NADA price guides. You can look up on line or purchase book to have with you. URL is : http://www.nadaguides.com/ This may help figure approximately what a new pontoon should cost with an appropriate dealer markup added. Happy hunting.

One bit of advice when you are finalizing negotionations, get the dealer to throw in some extras when you have basically got your best price. I got some good lifejackets and an extra seat thrown into the deal for free to "make the deal have weight".

Re: Price Negotiation

make a deposit, but do not make any payments or commitments to finance until the boat is rigged and prepped for delivery.
