If you are planning on using the motor after the rebuild, fine.

If you are planning on selling it, you are probably better off selling it as is (whole or parts).

Is there serious damage to the motor?
scoring?
broken rings?
Or could it just be a bad head gasket?
How much do you believe your mechanic?
And will he not go over his price estimate?

How did the water get in the cylinder and what are we doing to correct it from happening again?

Re: price on powerhead rebuild

as for how water got in there to begin with, i am not really sure. the only thing i can think of is when my girlfriends father hit bottom(mud). maybe wud or something clogged something temp. and it over heated. (no alarm came on) it was the 1st year i had the boat. ran fine the rest of that year, and started to seem like it was losing power the next year. my mechanic said he thought there was a slight warp to the head. gasket was fine when i pulled it off. he also said i had a warped exhaust plate. now as far as me trusting him? hes a friend of a friend, so who knows. the rebuild will be going to another shop. i will be using this after the rebuild. its an 84 wellcraft hull (CC 180 fisherman) which i love. i put a lot of work into the boat. i just want my engine back the way it was, so i can enjoy it again.

i dodnt think there is any serious damage to it. she does run, but a bit rough right now. the shop i will bring it to said 1500 for the rebuild, new pump, impellar, and any extra decking that might be needed and tax of course, he said, just under 1800$

try a new head gasket and exhaust plate cover first. No water flow could be dirty thermostat take that apart first and check.

Re: price on powerhead rebuild

I have seen several of the late model Merc/Forces warp the head in a high-temp situation. Run a compression check, and make sure it's blown before rebuild. Also, (very important), ask the mechanic if the $1800 is a fixed price for repair. A lot of shops quote a rebuild price and then call you back with "uh the crank is shot and you'll need a new one ", or "we found a crack in the block and that's going to run you another $1600", etc.
The late model Force/Mercs are prone to crank and block damage when they go. I end up replacing, or rebuilding, the crank on about 1 out of every three or four that come in. If that shop doesn't stock spare Force parts, it can get expensive.

Re: price on powerhead rebuild

i will ask him if its fixed. i know the compression on the cylander that is getting water is lower than the rest, i just cant remember exactly what my mechaninc said it was. he told me he uses wiseco pistons for the rebuild, which i looked uip and asked around, and got good replies about them. i still wish i knew how it happened.

the way the dock is, my boat almost sits on the mud bottom, when its low tide. i wonder if somehow, just after so many times of starting with maybe some mud in the intake made it overheat somehow? im reachin hear, because i always have **** coming out. i just want to be out on the water this year.
