Re: Prices in Land Big Fish used prices

Hi Mark

This guide:
http://www.landbigfish.com/nadaguide.cfm

My criticism may be a bit unfair. I actually have not seen that many outboards for sale. But the few I have seen are not in line with the guide. For instance, I think a '84 40? horse Evinrude is in the price guide for about $300. Yet I've seen some older Johnson/Evinrude motors for sale with a higher price and they were in need of some kind of work. That work could have been a tune up to more serious repair.

Now, what do you know about pricing schemes? Know where to get a reasonably priced motor in the 25-50 horse range?

thanks
Billy Bob

Prices vary across the country...Price Guides are tools used by dealers and retail resellers to fooy you into paying a particular price. The REAL guide is as follows. Here in south Florida, a buddy of mine has an "89" merc 20 hp Electric short shaft, remote for sale for about 750.00 bucks and the bites have been slow. The motor is beautiflul, used in fresh water only and is one of the newer style 20's and can be upgraded to a 25 by simply putting a 25 HP carb on it for about 35.00 bucks used. He thinking of cutting the price to $650.00 I bought a brand spanking new Mercury 3 cylinder 40 HP at Bass Pro Shops locally here 12 months ago for $2,500.00. I can also get ALL Mercury parts for 20% off list or more. A lot of times, some people think they have a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow waiting for them and they are entitled to "think" that. Jus' 'cause a motor is old does not neccessarily mean its worth a lot of money. And visa-versa too. Basicly 20% per year deprciation on new products is what you want to pay for any boat engine. After 5 years, they have pretty much bottomed out in deprciation being worth only 20% of their original value. This is how ALL financial institutions veiw the value of goods and how they finance things except for real property. Dealers, except for new stuff are the worst place to buy things and person to person sales are the best if ya know what your doing. ALWAYS be patient when your looking for an item of interest to you. I have come up with some fantastic deals. Use this formula as a true guide if you want to be a shrood buyer, and stick by your guns on the offers you give and make sure the items are in GOOD WORKING ORDER. Subtract monies for needed repairs. If the seller balks...MOVE ON and forget it! Let some other sucker be parted with his money.
