I am in the market for a small outboard for my Dinghy, between a 5-7.5 HP. I plan to buy one off of craigslist but I have no idea what a fair price would be to pay for one. I know there are many variables but is there a website or a way to determine roughly how much one is worth? Im looking to spend around $400. Thanks!

There are a ton of variables. New price isn't that much, like $1200 or something.

I'd pick something like this example http://desmoines.craigslist.org/boa/1645362558.html
I wouldn't choose that particular one for a couple of reasons. If the add said it had a new water pump and new coils and you could see it run in a bucket or something like that, that's what I would look for. Prices vary across the country. Read the outboard faq while you're busy pining.

Depending on where you are, alot of marine mechanics buy/sell these small guys over the winter to make some extra bucks. They are typically priced higher than the bottom bucket craigslist crap but they are usually serviced and ready to go.

Re: Pricing a small used outboard?

I have a 1973 Sears 3.5 HP and I paid $75 for it non-running. probably too much but I took it home, rebuilt the carb (very simple) drained old gas out, put new plug in and it fired right up. I wouldn't sell it for $150, I don't care what anyone says:D
Good luck!
