Re: Pricing on a 50hp outboard

depends on so many factors but I'd guess the 25 is "worth" $950 but more likely to sell at $650, in good running condition and if it looks like it was cared for.
I was shopping for used 70 Johnsons and I'd say they were around $1200 if early 90's. A 50 or "48 special" should be close. Once you cross 2000 look for a Yamaha. I think the mid to late 90's were supposed to be "troubled times" for OMC but I might have that wrong.
Also, while a salt-water boater won't care if the motor has been used in salt water, a fresh water boater will, so that aspect of your motor's history will affect your market and price. And no one believes "flushed after every use" and neither should you--but it doesn't matter than much IMO.

mercury-- $0.00

mid 90's 50hp are fine, no problems. 1,000-1,500 depending on if it has trim and tilt, condition. i would replace the VRO pump with a premixed pump. also look for a 48 spl of the same vintage. it is the same motor, just without the VRO.

What you need to pay depends on where you look and how hard you look, and most importantly the condition of what you look at. Prices are all over the map. My suggestion is to look at classified ads in your local newspaper, on bulletin boards at your local super market, Craigs List, E-bay and do a search on-line for the exact motor you need. Then throw out the lowest prices (they are junk) and the highest prices (they may look nice but the seller thinks it is more valuable than it is). A good buy will generally be somewhere in the middle. Prices also vary by locality so factor that into the equation.

Re: Pricing on a 50hp outboard

Here's the scary part: "Motor is in good shape. starts and runs good but needs a pump impeller, not pumping water." This says to me that he is running it, even just in the driveway, with no water pumping through it. If you do it accidentally for a second or two, no harm but more than that, trouble.

If it weren't for that, and compression is good, maybe so at that price--it's a sturdy motor and easy to get someone to work on. But that's like saying, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

Re: Pricing on a 50hp outboard

The mid 90's 50's and up seem to be pretty decent
I have the 55hp 95 model have taken the VRO off it and had the carbs rebuilt but that is it has never let me down.
for $500 it is a bit of a bargain even if you do spend another $500 on it to get it going.
So long as it has never over heated and the compressions are all good could be a bargain just try and find out how long he ran it before he realised it was not pumping water.
The motor would need to warm up to operating temperature and then above before it would do any damage.
cheers

A used motor is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it and as little as the seller will accept for it. Simple as that.
Just make certain that you check the motor out thoroughly before parting with your cash.

I don't think you're doing the right thing by dumping junk on a charity. And your tax deduction will be what they sell it for, if anything; the IRS caught on to that scam a while ago. you got a good price; spend a little for dump fees.

Or, if the boat is on the trailer, put it in the 'free" section on craigslist and let someone else take it away. win win.
