The check valves in most prime bulbs made today are really crummy. Some don't even have outlet check valves, relying instead on the check valves in the motor's fuel pump. Crummy check valves are why you have to hold the bulb verticle. I don't know why they make them that way, but they do. I have two aftermarket hoses in my boat, both Atwood, and you could pump on them all day and they won't get hard. Who cares? As long as they get fuel to the carb and the motor starts and runs just fine. Got more important things to worry about than a hard bulb.
