Primer bulb question

I bought a new fuel line/primer bulb assembly for my outboard, but the hose is a little too big. (3/8" I think) If I remove the metal clamp seen in the pic below on the hose, will there be a standard hose barb sticking out of the bulb, so that I can put a smaller fuel line on it?<br /><br /><br />Edited out strange pics.

I think it does. But if it is made for A 3/8 you may have trouble fiting A smaller one on it! What is this for size make? Tim

What, ya mean you couldnt make one out of an old radiator hose or something???

I wanted to use a peice of tranny cooler hose that I have but it wasn't long enough. <br /><br />

It will probably be a bit difficult to get a little smaller hose on there, but I'm sure I can get it on if I heat it up. It's for a '74 Mercury 1500.

Why dont you take back what you bought and buy the correct size or better yet buy a complete fuel line assembly and be done with it?<br /><br />Just a thought.

Just go to the hardware store and tell them your problem. They have barb reducers. You'll just need a short length of the smaller sized hose and a reducer for each end you want to make smaller. No big deal. It'll cost you a few bucks.<br /><br />On the other hand, you can go to Wally World and buy the right hose in the first place, probably for about what you paid on eBay for the wrong hose.<br /><br />eBay's great...but not for day-to-day stuff. If you had bought the wrong hose at Wally World or at your marine store, you could have returned it. Now, you get to spend money to kludge things to work or to buy a new hose and bulb.<br /><br />And so it goes...

I know there are plenty of fittings I can use to reduce it, but it will look much nicer and have less connections if I just attach a new peice to the primer bulb. A smaller hose will also be more flexible and work better for me. <br /><br />This hose would have worked fine if I had kept the quick disconnect on the motor, but I decided to get rid of that and now I'm running the fuel line directly to the pump. I made this decision long after I bought the hose. There are no walmarts anywhere near me...the only local place to get a hose like this wants around $30 for it. I could get about 5 of them on ebay for that price...

Wal-mart dont carry the right one for our old ilnines anyway! But they still have a universal one. But it is the same size that you have it is 7 or 8 bucks. Why did you go straight to the fuel pump? Make sure you dont go to small with that fuel line. You DO NOT want to starve it for fuel.<br />What I would do is add A inline filter to your hose and then reduce it after the filter you could do this under your cover next to the pump. Then it would look better. Back to wal-mart again they have just the marine filter you need. It comes with all size nipples with it they screw in the filter and would do just what you need. I have A extra one in my shop. Email me and I will be glad to send it to you at cost $7.00, Tim

How you like that 74 150 Merc? that is the same thing I have I love mine. Man she will kick butt!<br />other than those big bass boats. I have out ran any body that pulled up next to me. I have it on A 17' 1979 thundercraft Astro 165 SS. What boat are pushing it with?

Because the quick connect that's attached to the cowl is leaking, and I see no need for a quick connect anyway. <br /><br />

I already have an inline filter on the other side of the bulb under the splash well. <br /><br />

Easiest thing to do would be to replace the barb on the motor itelf with a larger diameter one to meet the fuel hose better. Should just be a brass fitting on the fuel pump or filter, correct?<br /><br />- Scott

Sounds like you need a new motor to fit that new hose.
