Primer solenoid lever

I just purchased a Johnson 2005 90 HP engine. My question is about the primer solenoid lever that needs to been moved when fogging the engine. I have the small manual that comes with engine. It shows the lever must be at 6:00 in order to start/run the engine and at 9:00 to fog it. My engine won't start at a 6:00 setting.....I need to set the lever at 3:00 for it to start. Is the manual wrong or am I missing something?

Re: Primer solenoid lever

To fog the mtr you should use the schrader valve on top of the primer with the right fog oil can connection and lever in 6:00 position, parallel with primer. You should not have to use the lever to start it. All you do is push in your ignition key when cranking it to activate the primer if all is working properly.

Re: Primer solenoid lever

No my question is that the manual says that there are two positions on this lever. "One is just for fogging and the other position is for normal operation of the engine" How do I know which is the right postion to run the boat in normal operation. The manual says to put level in 6:00 position for normal operation but it doesn't seem run well in this position (i.e. starves at high rpm).

Re: Primer solenoid lever

that being the case,i believe a carb clean is in order.new motors arent in my blood and boobie isnt here.6 year old motor sitting over winters probably has some gummed up carbs.always keep carbs clean.especially when they set for longer periods.

Re: Primer solenoid lever

Next time you run the mtr have the red lever PARALLEL with the solenoid body, push in your ignition key and see if the mtr wants to pick up or stumble. This will tell you if your primer system is working properly. If it wants to pick up and run better you probably have some carb probs. If it has no effect you got wiring or solenoid probs. The 9:00 position bypasses the normal function of the primer and when you pump your primer bulb it puts fuel directly into the mtr.
