1983-70hp johnson. When I pump the bulb and activate the primer it will not squirt fuel. It is kinda of hard to start when cold. Once it starts it works fine. Is that normal? Also I read where Ezeke said you can update to a schrader valve is this much better and worth doing?

Re: primer solenoid problem?

Your motor will be very difficult to start if the primer solenoid does not work. Do you hear the primer click when you push in the key? If so, try this test. Remove one of the primer hoses that leads to one of the carburetors. Pick the easiest hose to re-install. Pump up the bulb and press in the key. Fuel should shoot out the hose. If it does not and your primer is clicking, you likely have an obstruction either in the primer or in the hoses leading too or from the primer. It is pretty easy to disassemble the primer and see what is wrong. Just remove the four screws.

The schrader valve does not really do anything for your priming action. It is used to squirt fogging oil or engine tuner into the engine instead of squirting it into the carburetor barrel.

psteurer - Does the primer solenoid need a new gasket when taking it off?

Re: primer solenoid problem?

Good idea - thanks. I will try to order. Quick question - the solenoid seems to be leaking when I pull the gas line from the solenoid to the carb - the solenoid is in auto mode and I am pumping the gas bulb. Unfortunately, I am now seeing a little trickle of gas. Should I be concerned?

Thanks again for your help. This board is by far one of the best I have seen.
