Primer solenoid

I have a 1982 evinrude 150 which may need a primer solenoid. Question is, I see some of these are called a primer choke solenoid! They look the same, but are the primer solenoid and primer CHOKE solenoid the same animal?

Red lever in the correct position to run ?---Why would you need a new one.----It is an electric valve.----It opens when you push the key in.----If there is fuel pressure supplied to this wonderful unit , it sprays fuel directly into the engine.----It is mistakenly called a CHOKE by many folks.----If you are having issues with starting , what trouble shooting has been done.-----When cranking the motor over you push the key in till motor fires.

I am not there to assist.-----But maybe the filter on the primer is plugged.-----

Ok, you answered my question that it is mistakenly called a primer choke by some! Thanks for that! So, motor ran good but then last year, it was awful hard to start! Would flip the red valve out and she would start but run irradically, then stall. Replaced that front section but still ran the same! The solenoid clicks when you push the key in! I also tested the solenoid at 4.5 olms. Then replaced all fuel lines from the primer to the fuel rails to the carbs, then in a moment of weakness, I rebuilt the carbs! Then just recently, I noticed fuel which had congregated around the gaskets of the bottom two carbs! Perhaps I just didn’t tighten the screws hard enough! Might be able to tighten the middle carb with a right angle driver, but will probably have to take them both off as the bottom one will be very difficult to access! If they are leaking fuel, then air is probably getting in! Right???

I don’t believe I took the primer apart to check the filter or not, but will do that! Thanks!

Some will argue.-----I think your primer valve is working fine.----A quick test is pushing the key in when motor is running.----Motor should slow down some.-----But take your starter apart.----Do an ohm check on armature.----Should read infinity from commutator to shaft.----Load test battery even if new.----If motor cranks a bit slow it will be hard to start !

I will push the key in when I get the boat out and start it in another month! Don’t think there is anything wrong with the starter as between it and the batteries, the motor turns over quickly and will start easily when the valve is in manual mode! It just runs very rough and dies when the red valve is returned to it original position!

If it runs rough with red lever in the run position there are other issues with your motor.------Post the compression numbers.----And does spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more on all 6 leads?----That test is not done with the plugs.----You use a spark test device.----You have checked for a sheared flywheel key?

I have spark on all 6, but can’t say it jumps 3/8” gap! Compression is 92/93 on all 6 cylinders. I think that is low but have no idea what it should be other than within 10lbs of each other. And no, have not checked for a sheared flywheel key.

How did your motor run last season ?-----Have you installed a new impeller every 5 years ?-----Mixing gas and oil at 50:1 in your tank ?-----Some will argue.----I would retest compression with a known good gauge.---Or remove a cylinder head and inspect.-----A head gasket is cheaper than throwing new electrical parts at your motor.

Can certainty retest the compression, but what should decent compression be?

These motors in good condition start right up.----I would be looking for 120 PSI.------These motors are easy to trouble shoot.----I think I will step aside now.
