Priming and Painting Questions....

Hello, first off I'd like to say I have gone through copious threads on priming and painting to the point where my head is about to explode haha...

I have an older 22ft aluminum super sport painted white and blue. The paint is holding good in most spots. I have removed loosely bound paint and sanded - I thought that would have been the hard part till I fell into the realm of priming and painting.

There is not much bare aluminum spots but for the bare aluminum I will spray with a Zinc Chromate primer. as for the overall primer (to prime the entire boat) I was thinking of buying rustoleum. I was curious as to if you can buy rustoleum primer in quarts and/or gallons so I can spray it on. Do I need to even prime over the old paint at all???

I was going to paint the boat grey using rustoleum topside boat paint link is

http://www.rustoleum.com/cbgimages/documents/206999_1103_MA_32oz_Topside_GlossWhite.pdf

or should I stick to normal oil based rustoleum and add acrylic enamel hardener?

I'm so lost and the more I look at others threads the more nervous I get... any help would be greatly apprecited! Thanks guys!

Kyle

Re: Priming and Painting Questions....

Check the link at the bottom of my signature. It has all the info you are seeking. I use Valspar but it is basically the exact same paint as Rustoleum. Rustoleum Makes the paint in Quarts and gallons. Their Industrial Oil Based enamel is good stuff especially if you add the hardener. The formula in my link is the same for rustoleum. I'd use this primer...
http://compare.ebay.com/like/370563142868?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar and I highly recommend you primer the entire boat. Make sure and do a thorough cleaning and final wash down with Acetone before spraying your first coat of primer. Have you ever shot paint before? Are you using HVLP? What gun are you using?

Hey Woodonglass,

The link you sent me is for latex primer... I thought I needed oil-based primer? all this latex, oil-based, water-based, polyurethane, epoxy, enamel is killing me hahaha...

I call rustoleum yesterday to ask a couple questions... she said to prime the boat - but not to use ZC primer on any bare aluminum spots (said it was similar galvanizing properties?)

so from here I'm under the impression i need oil-based rustoleum grey rust primer (she said it bonds well to aluminum as long as its clean and scuffed a but - i'll lightly sand any spots again prior to). Then after the primer I'll use rustoleum grey (oil-based - enamel?) with some hardener in it. The customer service lady told me it voids any warrantee because they have yet to test it on their own products, but I want to use it because seems like a lot of guys on here swear it helps...

As for spraying, i've never done it before. I airbrush and understand the prinicple ideas, but I'm sure it is different in a lot of aspects... any tips on that would help. she told me to thin it with mineral spirits 10%...

Thanks again!

Re: Priming and Painting Questions....

Yep I picked the wrong pic from my library. Sorry bout that. The Oil based Bare Metal Primer is what you want. You should check the last link in my signature. Like I said, I have swithced to Valspar and they do have the hardener recommended for their paint. Tractor Supply sells it. The link gives you all the details on how to mix and either roll it or spray it. You can get a HVLP gun from HF for 30 bucks that'll do a good job. If you have a 20 gallon compressor of larger then you can get the job done nicely. I can help you with setting up the gun etc.

Hey Kyle, Grey is easy to lighten or darken. Add white to lighten, Black to darken. Easy!!!! If you still want to do the grey. You can use Acrylic Artist Paint from Michaels and thin it with Acetone and add to the Valspar to custom tint your paint. I did and got Baby Blue. Worked great.
