Normal position for the primer solenoid is to have the red handle aligned with the cylindrical part of the device.

In emergencies with a dead battery, you could turn the handle 90 degrees and allow the fuel to bypass the carburetor and start the engine with a rope.

If the handle is left perpendicular to the solenoid, the engine will flood and stall.

The primer solenoid also has a Schrader valve; the Schrader valve can be used for fogging oil when preparing for winterization or storage, and can also be used for your annual de-carbon treatment.

You can repair the primer solenoid yourself. The black cover is part # 437228 or aftermarket # 18-0993. http://www.iboats.com/Cover_Gasket_...6786070--**********.481783493--view_id.485776

The red Schrader valve part and the o-ring for it is part #175158 or aftermarket part # 18-0871. http://www.iboats.com/SERVICE_VALVE...6786070--**********.481783493--view_id.485775

If you want to check with a local BRP dealer, they will probably have the two OEM repair kits in stock. http://dealerlocator.evinrude.com/EN/?Rnd=1172157085156
