Priming the Oil?

I have a 2002 Mercury 125 with oil injection
I just installed it and someone said that the oil system had to be "primed"
This is my first oil injection motor and have no idea if this is true and if it is true,
how do I prime it
The motor was shipped with no fluids in it and I'd rather not burn it up on the outing
Thanks

Assuming it's all installed and hooked up.

1. Fill the tank on the motor, and put an adequate supply in the boat tank. It doesn't need to be plumb full.
2. Mix oil in the fuel to 50:1. It's a good idea to use only part of the tank for it, like 5 gallons in a 20 gallon tank.
3. With cooling water supplied, either at a dock, in a tank, or with cuffs on, start the engine and idle it. Then slightly crack the cap on the engine tank. It should overflow soon. Tighten the cap, clean it up, and yer good to go. Don't overtighten the cap, just tighten it enough to staunch the leak. Overtightening will eventually crack the cap, and they're expensive.

Run the 50:1 till you're sure it's oiling right. Then you can just add gas to the main tank. A little oil there won't hurt a thing.

If it's using oil, and no alarms sound, she's good to go. It should give you a diagnostic beep (i'm here) when you turn on the key. If someone has messed with the engine, check the alignment of the oil mixture lever on the oil pump to be sure it's mixing the right amount for the throttle setting.

hope it helps

Re: Priming the Oil?

Thank you John,
That helps a lot
I was going to siphon the remaining 50:1 gas from the tank
Now I won't have to
Not sure what the oil pump lever is, but I'll check the manual
and you said it will overflow?
A lot....?
Should I have a pail standing by?
Thanks again for all the help

Naw, just have a rag handy.

The point is, the engine tank is to be plumb full tight to the top. You get that by cracking the cap just loose enough so it can leak, and let the engine force oil in from the boat tank. When it gets full, you'll spill a bit till you tighten the cap, which your hand is resting on waiting for the event.

The oil pump, at least if it's like the V6 pump, has a lever on it that is operated by the throttle linkage. It controls the amount of oil delivered per revolution of the engine. There's a mark to line up at idle and an adjustment for it. It should be in the book. Otherwise, take a close up picture of that lever with the control stick centered and the idle lever down, and post it. someone will say "that's good" or "move it this a way".

hope it helps
