Probably a STUPID question but...

I'm in the process of reinstalling the outboard motor on my boat after replacing the transom. I noticed that when I have the mounting bracket flush with the transom, the "hooks" on the front of the outboard hang over the edge of the transom by a good 1"+. Is this normal/ok or does something need to be done to it? I can't for the life of me remember how it was before I removed the motor.

Well, Gunner, there are no stupid questions, only stupid people! Naw--just kidding. Gotta kick them when they are down--it's easier!

If your engine is a bolt on type, the hooks in the front of the clamps do almost nothing- they are just an aid while positioning the engine on the transom. They help to keep you from dropping the engine while drilling or marking the bolt holes. YES, they will be in front of the transom by a varying amount, depending upon transom thickness.

Personally, I don't trust or use them when mounting an engine. I use a couple of massive "C" clamps to hold the engine to the transom while drilling the holes for the mounting bolts.

Well, that's good to know. Now I can just line everything up and redrill the holes a bit so the bolts can pass through.

Don't forget to seal up those holes really well or you'll be redoing the transom again.

Yeah, I'll fill them with something- maybe PL or something like that.

Would like to see pix of what you have been doing since 10/15/2007! FYI, the plywood transom core on my 1965 LoneStar 16.5ft Medallion II was 1-5/8in. plus another 1/8in. aluminum cap and the transom bracket hooks on my 1968 Johnson 100HP had a substantial gap under them. Sounds like you should be okay unless your new transom is skinnier for some reason.

Like Willy says, I am curious about the 1" hangover dimension. Transoms which I am familiar with are at least 1.5" of hard core plus any additional amenities the boat builder adds: metal, glass, rubber inner/outer coverings.

How thick was your old transom, how thick is the new one, and how many hp is your engine?

My old transom was 1 1/2" thick as is the new one. I also replaces the factory metal cap that runs the length of it. The only thing I did different was instead od a 1/2" sheet of plywood on the outside skin of the boat between the transom and the motor, I used 3/4" for more strength and because I had some leftover.
