I bought a 2000 255CC Sea Pro about 2 yrs. ago with a 2000 250 Ocean Pro on it. From the day I bought it's had an idle problem...will run WOT to 1\5 throttle all day. Get down around 6 \ 8 mph down to idle speed and it wants to cut off.. Starts right back up but $%%% it's aggravating. I changed everything from the fuel rail - fuel lines from the tank back to carbs - changed bulb ( 3 times ) - plugs changed twice - checked the coil outs - power pack checks good - put a new non VRO fuel pump on - compression #s look good - pyrometer says the heads are the right temp - changed t-stats - new vac. lines - decarbed - have not had carbs rebuilt but they look good..........................................but it won't low speed or idle. Ideas..?
Also this boat is rated up to 400 hp. I bought it with the original 250 hp on it - it was probably sold new with the 250 on it to keep the price down.
Since I bought it the original lower unit crashed at 1\2 throttle - limped back in from 5 miles out. Spun a prop - spun another prop. Bought a Piranaha prop and no more prop problems. Back in July we were 43 miles offshore, had been 3\4 throttle for 2 hrs. - slowed down to get rigs ready to fish, as we throttled up to go the other 5 miles to our spot the new replacement lower unit imploded. Had to call BoatUS for a tow.
Could this boat be under powered and there's just too much torque on the lower end of this 250. The boat weighs in @ about 6300# loaded to go offshore. If I could figure out the lower end crashes I'd probably keep the motor and try to live with or continue trying to fix the idle issue. This a strong running outboard but I've lost my confidence in it and lack of confidence 60 miles out is not good. Any ideas on the lower unit \ prop issues. The 2nd new replacement lower unit is still in the box in the garage. I'd rather keep the motor and not spend the big $$$$ - what would you do..?
