problem fuel?

I ran my boat with a coolant leak keeping an eye at the level in coolant reservoir. At some point while crossing a stretch with heavy boat traffic I left it unattended for few minutes just monitoring the temp gauge and keeping3200 RPM steady. Then I felt that the motor-Merc 170 started to run erraticly as if no fuel is supplied at certain moments, but when increased the throtle it responded accordingly.I stopped the engine and checked the coolant level .The reservoir was a;most empty and the coolant was sort of boiling with a white froth at the bottom of the reservoir.Though the temp gauge did not show more than 160 grades I assume that the engine was overheating.Could that cause the fuel to boil and not feed the engine properly? The air temp was 107 and the sea water was around 80.My dog house is pretty tight as well.Thank you!

If there is no water in the coolant passages, the sender ceases to function.
I think you need to start with a block pressure test.
Search for it in here.
