Problem in getting VP280 drive to come up

I have a 1976 Bayliner Skagit 2250 with a 1976 VP280 outdrive. The reason I am specific about the year is that some of the parts on the VP280 outdrive schematic must be newer and are not the ones on this years o/d.

Specifically, the outdrive motor is not a two pigtail connector one but has an AB Electrolux motor with a 4 pin connector built into the housing.

Nothing would work at all so I replaced the fuse, limit switch in the relay and had the drive motor rebuilt by a professional motor re-builder.

Here's the problem. When you actuate the dash switch the motor turns and if you look at the drive from the outside, there's a piston that pushes against the drive, unlocking the latch but doesn't push down any farther. If I hold up the drive, the piston keeps coming down and when I let go of the drive, it will stay up. When I use the switch at the dash to bring it down, the piston retracts and the drive comes down.

What is the problem and why can't I get it to come up? (Man, did I leave myself open or what.)

Hopefully you just need to tighten the upper cover of the lift mechanism. It tightens down on a spring and acts as an adjustable clutch. Tighten the cover by a half turn and see if it helps. Maybe more if its been taken apart.

Is the motor still turning, or is it stalled when lifting. If the motor stalls it just doesn't have enough torque to lift it.

I finally changed to a 2 wire motor this year, it lifts the drive twice as fast and all the way to the bumper

SQBTR, yes, it's stalling out. Did you have to change the relay also when you changed the motor? If so, which relay did you change to and how much did it cost. The only thing I don't understand is if it worked originally, why doesn't this motor work now?

relays stay the same, just need to rewire them. Paid $150 for the two wire motor
