So I just got this small grumman boat with a 40hp Nissan NS40C outboard. The guy told me the motor was no good. So I checked it and it had compression, So i went to the basic and put fresh gas, sprayed carb cleaner in the carb, cleaned the spark plugs. I had no luck, But Then I started messing with the screws on the carb itself. I was able to turn the screw that controls the far most inner flap down and engine cranked just fine. It was reving real high so I backed off the screw some and it was runing like a sewing machine. It runs great Now. So my problem is everytime i try to start the engine after it sits for an hour or so I have to turn that screw down to get to crank. I know that its open the flap a little bit. I tried to do the same thing buu starting it with the trottle down but no luck any help would be great.

Does the motor have remote controls, or is it a tiller model? You can download a copy of the owner's manual at http://www.nissanmarine.com/tech_talk/owners_manuals.html and read up on the proper technique to start. Sounds like you are trying to find a way to choke the carb when cold (which is the correct procedure.) If remote control, keep in mind that the key switch is a "push to choke" design for starting a cold motor.
