Problem translating johnson model number into year model

I'm working on a 9.9 johnson that is in need of some parts. My buddy read the model number off while I was writing it down. The problem is, that it's not converting to a year model correctly for some reason. I'm not sure if he read the numbers incorrectly or maybe I heard him wrong and wrote the number incorrectly. I'll drive the 8 miles back to take another look at the number and verify there wasn't a mistake made when writing it down tomorrow. I just thought I'd see if someone here came up with a different translation than I did. The model # is J10RCNS. The motor appears to be a 70's or possibly even an 80's model based on appearances but that is just a guess. Can anyone verify the number is incorrect or shed any light on this?

Was that motor a cream colored motor? Just curious.

White and blue paint is what is called for in that year.

Yes, it is either cream/off white or just a dirty faded white, I wouldn't swear to either one. If there is any blue on it I haven't noticed it.

Buy that mate a beer :D.....the number is correct and as already mentioned decodes to an '82 model ("CN").....Johnno's from this era were painted white and do progress to a more creamy hue with age.

Thanks guys for your help with this. I pulled the parts diagram up using that year model and verified that everything matched up. Now I need to start contacting some of the salvage yards for parts. Hard to believe that as plentiful as these motors are, there aren't more parts out there for a more reasonable price than what I'm finding on ebay.

I haven't done any test on this engine yet, but what would be the lowest acceptable compression?

Have you had a look right here at iboats or boats dot net for your parts?.....they are both under retail price usually......you need to get a bit lucky finding the right OEM stuff on ebay.

Yes I've looked here, but I think I'll have to find someone that's parting one out to get some of the stuff I need or it's going to price me out of being able to realistically justifying repairing this one. And I can't find things on here like the tiller gear and some other parts that are more of a structural type.

If your after more "structural type parts" (although have to ask what they are, assuming the body assemply...),try Craigs et al list around your general area and try and get a free or near to donor motor. May save u big bucks.

Most of that sort of stuff is NLA anyway so a donor motor would be the most cost effective option.....regular service items are another matter.....try the two options i mentioned for those.

Parts like the gear on the tiller handle, a part off of the clamp/swivel assembly to name a couple of them. They appear to still be available new but just for those 2 alone, it would be $120 new. By the time you throw in a rebuild kits for the carb, water pump, and fuel pump it would be over $200. And that's without even getting under the cowling. I've been searching craigslist for a donor engine, but no luck so far. Guess I'll keep looking and keep my fingers crossed.

My '81 9.9 clocked in at 110PSI on each cylinder, and the motor is PRISTINE. You should be more concerned with the cylinders being within 10% of each other than the height of the numbers. I have heard of #'s as low as 60PSI for this motor running just fine.

Also J, you'd be better off waiting around for a 'parts motor' on CL or somewhere locally. I usually find parts motor from $50-$100, whether it be a 1984 5hp or a 1967 80hp. Way more economical to do things this way, just sucks when you are in a hurry to get the motor on the water. That is why I have 6 motors!!
