Do you blow the primary or secondary side of the relays?

You might check the motor for shorts to ground. That could cause it to pull more current than the relay can handle.

My motor is a 87 175 VRO johnson. How can i tell what side of the relay is not working? i ordered a new switch and harness hoping this might fix the problem. The shifter was a used unit . The trim motor is new and i don't see any ground wires on it ,it is a 2 wire unit(blue and green).

Relays are like single pole, double throw switches. When you apply power to the relay primary, it switches to allow battery voltage to pass thru it. When the relay is at rest, ground passes thru it.

You should have some small resistance across the primary. When power is applied, the relay should click.
