Suggest first step is to try trim at each motor using switch on the motor itself. Should help determine if problem is with motor or at remote switch.

Thank you, i have done that already and results are the same if I do it in the remote or in the engine.

Next step would be to obtain a repair manual for the specific motors. In the manual there are steps to check each relay.

I recently had same problem in that motor would trim down but not up. Turns out problem was with down relay.

Also, clean, really clean, all electrical connections as testing.

Re: Problem with power trim

possibly low voltage or bad relays could cause problem.
A voltmeter in hand and checking at different points along the circuit should help see what is going on.
remember the relays have to reverse the polarity so they have to make connections on the + and - to make the motor run

Thank you. I will try that. I do not know how to do it but will look for some one that can do it. It might be something in that direction since I had a short circuit due to a battery that made contact with the aluminum and melted the grounds of the engine that are near the power trims. Most likely the relays were damaged. Your comments I consider are very helpful.

You can by pass the relays with a couple of jumper wires. Hope I am wrong but am afraid you will find the relays bad. If you took one apart you would find that they are not that well made in spite of their high price. If I remember correctly, they are about $414 each. The actual contacts are just pressed in dimples and pimples in a thin piece of copper not solid points like you would expect. I am very disappointed with YAMAHA, have 2 of them. regards FRED

Thank you Fred. I did not know they were so expensive. I look on boat and it showed it for US$137.00 each for my 90hp engine. Maybe I am looking at the wrong part. I will have to find out before buying them.
In another boat I had good experience with Yamahas but in this boat I am having problems in both engines.

Re: Problem with power trim

When I worked on mt T&T, I could not find an after market source for the relay. Had no problem finding the motor. If you have a good source, share it with us.
Correct p/n can be found at yamahaoutboardparts.com ( RODBOLT hangs out there). If you get the correct p/n you should be able to cross reference it to other vendors. I did that with the motor at sierraonlineoutboardpartscatalog , motor cost a fraction of what YAMAHA wanted.
If you find you do need a motor, unlikely, let me know. Its yours, 2 wire-4 bolt flange. YAMAHA p/n 64E-43880-01-00. regards FRED
